Flashback Friday – Time Warp

Despite my decision to outsource most of the cooking for last Friday’s dinner party, I did manage my time well enough to put a few homemade dishes on the table.  I think a dinner party should be about enjoying time with your guests, not slaving over a hot stove.  So if time doesn’t permit me to get dishes done ahead of time, I have no qualms about letting someone else do the work for me.  I also have no shame about letting my guests know that, no, I did not fry up all that chicken; it came out of a red and white bucket.  My time is at least worth an order of 16 piece extra crispy to go. Sticker Shock

Last Saturday, the day after our carbolicous dinner party, we stocked up on supplies for the first week of our South Beach journey.  Good thing there were leftovers to fill me up before this trip to the store.  Looking at the grocery list as I navigated the grocery aisles, the hungries definitely could have tempted me to toss verboten items into the cart.  But I came prepared. Flashback Friday – Topsey Turvey

Topsey Turvey

Topsey Turvey.

Prickly.

Disjointed.

Take your pick.  They all seem to apply right now.  Maybe it’s because it’s August and it’s hot.  Maybe it’s because we’re starting down a new path to hopefully better life choices.  Maybe cosmic forces are conspiring against me. Who knows?  But things that should be easy, they just aren’t.  And the things that are never easy, they are harder than ever.

So I remind myself to add a generous scoop of patience to anything and everything.  Truth be told, I would prefer it to be a spoonful of sugar disguised as my lunchtime can of coke.

Remain Calm

On my way into work today, I noticed something odd. That I noticed anything at 8am is remarkable. But I digress. What I saw was about a dozen large ants scurrying about the side of the building.

Now, I don’t mean meandering along the ground. No, I mean zigzagging their way up and down the exterior. Vertically. Which made me wonder, do the ants ever realize that they’ve left the ground? Continue reading “Flashback Friday – Remain Calm”

Flashback Friday – Clazy

Clazy

In a single word, this will be one clazy week.  I’ve got several major deadlines at work that require varying degrees of my time.  I’m hosting dinner for 8 on Friday.  And this weekend, the mistah and I will embark on the South Beach program (I hate the word diet).

The reason for SB is that I think we could definitely be making some better food choice at our house.  And if our wardrobes happen to fit better as a result, so much the better. Continue reading “Flashback Friday – Clazy”

Flashback Friday – Get Yo’ Pie On

Get Yo’ Pie On

I’m not one to spread rumors.

BUT.

According to their web site, the Hampden location of Dangersouly Delicious Pies is open.

Maybe after the non-national retail chain repair service appointment on Saturday (after that fiasco, I found a local company who was more than happy to have a live person make an appointment with me that I have every expectation will be kept), the mistah and I can make a run into Hampden for some Dangerously Delicious Pie.

But maybe I should call first.  Just to be sure they are in fact open.  So if you call and get a busy signal, that would be me jamming their lines so you think they aren’t open and don’t come and eat all the pie before we get there.

Sadly, in the time since this first posted on Exit 51, the Hampden location of Dangerously Delicious closed.  However, they are still serving up seriously good pie from the shop on Light Street.

Tilghman Island

What do you do when you’ve maxed out your vacation for the rest of the year but you want to get away? Why, you take a staycation. Despite all the current buzz, the concept is not new. It’s being a tourist in your own town, city, state, etc. Continue reading “Flashback Friday – Staycation”

Flashback Friday – Recipe for Disappointment

Recipe for Disappointment

Ingredients:

1 broken gas clothes dryer

1 automated appointment service

1 outsourced call center

4 phone calls

1 Friday afternoon

Take the product manual from the broken gas dryer in your basement and locate the toll free service number. Start with one phone call to the automated appointment scheduler. Make an appointment for that afternoon.  Wait three hours to rise. Add remaining phone calls to outsourced call center, one at a time, until frothy. Be sure to mix in a generous pinch of language barrier. Stir well.

Tasting Note: A side of bitter resentment makes a wonderful finishing touch.

Would You Believe?

Rose Levy Beranbaum talked to me?   Well she did. And I can prove it.

Ok, so it’s not like we had a leisurely chat over coffee or anything. She was on today’s Free Range on Food chat hosted by the Washington Post. Seeing as how I had drooled all over myself reading her pie recipes, this was an opportunity I just couldn’t pass up to ask a few questions.

So I did.  And she answered ‘em.  Check it out: Continue reading “Flashback Friday – Would You Believe?”

Did Someone Say Pie?

It’s almost lunch time and I foolishly checked out the Washington Post Food Section.  Give me a moment while I clean up the slobber that is smeared all over my monitor.

Now, I can’t vouch for these recipes but when you’ve got Rose Levy Beranbaum and the Washington Post involved, I’m thinking the recipe is going to be pretty good.

Yes, this does mean that I will be taking home recipes for flaky cream cheese pie crust, cherry lattice pie, and perfect peach pie. Lord have mercy on me.
