Shameless Self Promotion

BAH Tube Sign

Recently I’ve been inspired to treat BAH as a serious endeavor.  It finally dawned on me that by investing my time in the blog to cook and write and photograph, what I’ve basically done is develop my own personal brand.  Heck, people charge a lot of money to do that and here I’ve gone and done it purely by accident.  So I started doing things that I never imagined I’d do – like buying domain names, ordering business cards, trying to make sense out of html code and CSS, and finally saying to the world that I’m a blogger.

“Hello world, I’m Wendi and I’m a blogger.  Here’s my card.”

The latest entry on the list of things I never thought I’d do was set up a Page on Facebook.  Go ahead, log on to your Facebook account and search for Bon Appetit Hon.  We’re there, perhaps you’d like to be our Fan?  I promise that there will be no secret passwords or handshakes, no mandatory reading lists, and no pop quizzes.

My apologies if you saw me launch this over at Facebook and are already in the know.  But since it looks like this Social Networking thing is here to stay, I will shamelessly get the word out to try and bring some BAH flavor to the party.

Remember that day I told you about when I got sucked into the hot mess of VH-1’s Charm School? These pictures are the reason why.

SFC and I won a photo shoot at a fundraiser for Baltimore Station. Their mission is to “provide rigorous self-help programs in a safe, caring residential setting to support men, most of whom are veterans, who are transitioning from the cycle of poverty, substance abuse and homelessness to self-sufficiency.”

So, with the exception of those 90 minutes of my life that I’ll never get back from Charm School, it was a win-win situation. Baltimore Station got a donation to support their mission and SFC and I got to run around Ft. McHenry like rock stars having our picture taken.

All that and Smitten Kitchen’s broccoli slaw too. That’s how you turn a hot mess into a good day.

Amuse Bouche

It’s a treat when The Mistah and I go out to eat.  An even bigger treat is when we go someplace where the chef offers an amuse bouche.  It’s a tasty little morsel before the meal, a culinary greeting from the chef, a happy surprise.  Today I’m offering you an amuse bouche of sorts, blog style.  In the coming weeks, here’s what you’ll see at Bon Appetit Hon:

Cover Girl

Remember last year’s Maryland State Fair saga?  Lesson learned.  This year’s entries were matted and framed according to MSF regulations before The Mistah and I headed off on holiday.  All I had to do was get back to the States, deliver them to the fairgrounds, and let the Wheel of Fortune decide if it was going to land on my number.  But before any of that happened, The Baltimore Guide, a community newspaper, wanted to speak with me about my experience exhibiting and competing at the Fair. I figured it would end up being some little blurb as part of a larger piece.  And then I went online to see if the article had published and found myself on the cover.  Me, a cover girl?  Go figure. Shorted

Used to be that when a recipe called for 8 ounces of pasta, I could just measure out half a box and be done. Not anymore. Have you noticed how with many of the things we buy, like pasta, ice cream, and coffee, you don’t get as much as you used to? But you’re still paying the same price. Continue reading “Shorted”

Now Departing From Gate A10

passport

We’re leaving today on vacation. In the next ten days, we’ll visit three countries, take the Chunnel, have a date with U2, and navigate the roads of Belgium and France without a GPS. What could possibly go wrong?

I’ve left a few nibbles here at BAH in case you stop by while we’re gone.

I think it’s going to be a grand holiday and I can’t wait to tell you all about our adventures.

I stumbled across today’s random links at The Kitchn.

The first is a great tip that may eliminate the need for flipping vegetables when they are roasted in the oven. Now why didn’t I think of that?

Second is a sweet panini that you can make even if you don’t have a press. Bonus points are awarded for the suggestions of types of bread suited to the recipe.

Dining Out

The Mistah and I don’t go out to eat often.  Meals are usually served up BAH style at home.  When we do eat out, it’s usually someplace we know and love.  It’s a short list, but it’s also the places that we recommend whenever someone asks us where to go.  Recently, when I was trying to think of someplace to enjoy a casual evening out with fellow B’more Bloggers, my mental rolodex suggested RUB. Meryl, Amy, and Nora

Mattbites had the opportunity to interview the trio of Julie & Julia’s ladies – Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, and Nora Ephron.  To me, this is the blog equivalent of the Behind the Scenes Special Feature that you get on dvd.  And I love, love, love, Special Features.  Just ask The Mistah.  He makes himself scarce when we finish a movie because he knows that I will get lost in hours of Deleted Scenes, The Making Of, or Gag Reels.

Thanks Matt for whetting my appetite for what I imagine could be a full day of Julie & Julia dvd enjoyment.

Bon Appetit Hon!

You know how people grow and develop and change over time?  I’ve discovered that blogs can do the same thing.

Bon Appetit Hon had its beginnings back in 2007 as Exit 51.  I set it up as a means to keep in contact with my husband while he was overseas.  But as time passed, more and more of Exit 51 became about food.  What I was making, what I was thinking of making, what worked, and what failed.  Not to mention all the food diversions that the Internet threw my way.

So in 2009, just as Exit 51 was about to enter the Terrible Two’s, I decided it was time to make a change.  Call it growing pains, or an identity crisis, or whatever you like.  But to me, the name Exit 51 just didn’t convey the idea that it’s about the food.  And Bon Appetit Hon was born.

Exit 51 still lives on here for now.   And there will be links back to it since part of moving forward is always remembering where you’ve been.  I hope you’ll follow along and see where this journey takes us.

Welcome to my kitchen in Smalltimore.  Pull up a chair, make yourself at home, and Bon Appetit Hon.
